Thanks for turning on comments - Wonderful stuff - one of my best friends is an 83-year-old fighter pilot who started with 35 missions in B-17's (used up 18 engines and 2 aircraft but nobody died) with the 8th AF then went on to Korea-Viet Nam in fighters - retired a 2-star. Still drives a Corvette and a replica Cobra over to Pensacola to visit his wife at the National Cemetery.

Also just read "American Patriot", the Coram biography of Bud Day - "Misty 1", most decorated USAF pilot, and John McCain's roommate at the Hanoi Hilton. Read it before you consider voting for Kerry if you ever did. I know you (and I too to some extent) have embraced progessive politics but there has to be room for these warriors somewhere in the political spectrum, if the species survives.

I live in USAF fighter country in the FL panhandle. These older guys are going out fast. They will be missed.

Great story! In 1967, I was a young 19 year old avionics troop TDY to Ubon with the Blind Bat C-130 mission out of Naha. I will never forget the day we were standing outside in front of our maintenace shack when over the runway comes a screaming F-4 at about 50 feet. Not only is he balls to the wall, he's doing a roll at the same time. I later learned it was Col. Olds after his 4th kill (I think). I will never forget it.

This is a fitting tribute to a great leader of men.

Thanks

I was unfortunate to have left graduated AF ROTC in 1977, when our government behaved so shamefully toward its military that we were not permitted to wear uniforms when I was assigned as a logistics officer in the Pentagon!

The stories of Col Olds are legend, and recounted by my father (B17 pilot) as I grew up. I regret that military service has become so sanitized. My hope its that there stil reside among our forces, individuals with stamina, fortitude, and patriotism enough to again raise our standard against the enemies of freedom.

thank you sincerely for this posting.

From an old Huey driver, General Olds was my hero.
They really don't make them like him anymore.

The story about the flyby at the Air Force Academy is true. The flight leader was named Mathews. He wasn't supossed to go supersonic, but did so. The sonic boom broke the windows. He claimed it was an accident, but the brass didn't believe him. They made him transportation squadron commander (motor Pool) at McConnell AFB for about a year as punisment.

This tells it all about a true Fighter Pilot. May God give our future leaders the guts and strength to carry on the actions and traditions exemplified by Col Olds

"Fighter Pilot Porn" is a fantastic piece of writing!

I have been doing research on fighter pilot songs for the past twenty years and I would like very much to quote from "Pilot Pilot Porn" in a paper I am writing. Unfortunately, I can't identify the writer. If he would be kind enough to get in touch with me I would be very grateful.
